Fuels Management Site Tour & Discussion

What are the Department’s active projects?

  • OV-1: 120-acre shaded fuel break on the north ridgeline
  • OV-3: Vegetation removal along Olympic Valley Rd.
  • OV-4: 127-acre; 150′ deep vegetation thinning behind the neighborhood.

What can I expect at this meeting?
This will be an opportunity to view the pre- and post- conditions of the OV-1 project and to learn about the desired conditions at OV-3 and OV-4, likely looking at conditions from the bike path. Chief Chisholm and the District’s contracted Registered Professional Forester will be available for Q&A. Please be prepared for hiking.

Why are Shaded Fuel Breaks Important?
A shaded fuel break will have large, healthy trees with smaller diameter trees and surface vegetation removed to reduce forest fuel continuity. Treatment will aid in fire suppression and significantly reduce flame length, intensity, rate of spread and potential duration of wildfire in this area. Discontinuity of forest fuels will also improve forest health by increasing vigor and reducing damage from insects and disease.
